4th regional debate and quiz competition



Ada College of education emerge champions of 2013 Regional Unicom debate.

Ada College of education, mixed college in Ada, emerged winners of the 2013 edition of the regional debate held at Mount Mary’s college of education on Friday. They beat the defending champions and Abetifi College of education in a keenly contested final.

                     Each of the finalists – Presbyterian college of education, Abetifi College of education Mount Mary’s college of education and Ada College of education– presented three contestants who showed their determination to win the coveted trophy.

       Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) held it 4th Unicom quiz and debate regional competition at mount Mary’s College of Education, Somanya on Friday. The competition always takes place every year. The competition is usually held between the colleges of Greater Accra and Eastern sector. The theme for this year Unicom quiz and debate is TEACHER EDUCATION A KEY TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT. The participants were the host college Mount Mary’s college of education, Ada College of education, Presbyterian women’s College of education, Presbyterian college of education, Accra College of education, SDA College of education, Abetifi College of education and Kubi College of education.
Eight colleges were supposed to participate in the quiz and debate of the colleges but due to one reason, one appears at the venue. As a result of that there was a call of elimination on the topic: “Technology has cause on harm in religious system of worship” where Presbyterian women’s college of education exhibits their highly morals to riddance kubi college of education to reach the semi-finals of the competition.  
                           The main theme for quiz and debate was “the frequent change in Ghana education system by politicians has cause more harm than good.”  After all the colleges have battle it out mount Mary’s college of education been the host of the competition knock out Presbyterian women’s college of education, Ada college of kick off the defending champions of last year Presbyterian college of education, and Accra college of education bang SDA college of education out to qualify for the semi-finals
The various colleges went to neck-to-neck at the semi-finals on the topic: “extension of four semesters to five semesters on campus programme of teacher trainee’s college is disadvantage to the college student.” Ada college of education showed their eagerness to carry the day right from the first round where they came strongly agued points, where Ada college of education again proves that they to be in the final by scoring 214 points and Abetifi college of education 211 points and mount college of education of scores 210points and Accra college of education 200 points to the finals.
                         As Ada College of education takes on the host of the competition mount Mary’s college of education to compete in the final battle of the competition. As the final curtain drawn to close the two finalists of the colleges were to justify their inclusion the topic: “withdrawal of the teacher trainee allowance is doing more good to the government than the teacher trainee.” where Ada college of education was for the motion and mount Mary’s college of education against. Ada college agued and extracted vital issues concern about the topic and were able to convenience and prove beyond doubt that their really worth of coveted trophy. Whereby they extracted that government more plans in hand in the development of the colleges to expand and improve on those exiting one and raise funds to create more colleges to facilitate the increasing number of students in the country.
                         With these elaborated points above Ada College of education became the ultimate champions of the day and placing the host of the competition mount Mary’s college of education 2nd in the debate competition. Mount Mary’s college of being the host of the competition took away volleyball and net as their prize and Ada College took home a set of jerseys and the trophy. 
                         Whereas, Abetifi College took the lead with 10 points, ADA, PWCE, PCE, SDA had 9 points each, MMCE 7, KCE 6 and Accra College in the first round of the quiz. In the second round base on English language ADA had 8 points and ABETICO, ACCE, PWCE, PCE, MMCE, SDA and KCE had 9 points each. The third round was table on mathematics. PWEC won that round with 29 points having second 28points and SDA third with 27points.
                         But there was an anticlimax to the grand finale; the quiz many have touted as fair and open was marred with controversy when Presbyterian women’s college support seating next to their contestants  believe by the SDA that the support was feeding PWCE in section of the competition to  had their answers right. Faced with a shattered dream of annexing the trophy for Mount Mary’s college as their slogan between the quiz host and win, a member allegedly instructed their students to move back.  

Calm was however restored when the consultants for the quiz exhaustively explained to them the fact that it was fair and no attempt was made to give special privilege to any of the competing colleges
              With quiz competition, SDA College takes the third position takes home table tennis and net, Mount Mary’s college being second took valley ball and net and Presbyterian women’s college winner of 2013 edition of quiz took away a set of jersey.
                    The national patron of the teacher trainees association of Ghana Mr. peter Attafuah took the opportunity to address the challenges that the colleges are facing the TTAG poor developmental  infrastructure and plead on government to come to their aid in development of the colleges.
Also, one of the executives organizing sector of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana for year, Ms Sonia Osei says that they lack sponsors for their programmes. She also spoke about the support received from GES and other sponsors, they however outlined that one major challenge they still face was financial assistance. They said efforts were being made to ensure that the number of participating colleges is increased in the next edition.
